What amp settings should you use to get a good heavy metal sound?

It depends on what you want, there are different kinds of metal tones.

Firstly, don't go full gain. There is a sweet spot where you can get the kind of chugging you want without turning the tone into a fuzzy mess. Get the gain to that point.

Then how do you like it? Cutting and aggressive? Go for high mids (This is a must for me, I HATE low mids) or dark and more in the backround? Then lower the mids.

If you want a more chugging tone it is my understanding that you can get a tube screamer to achieve it.

Those are pretty much the basics, you need the right amp and/or pedals though.
